Is putting yourself first at work selfish?

No. Putting yourself first is not selfish. It is the prerequisite for showing up as your fullest self for everyone else. Women who give from a depleted place give their most exhausted, most reactive version and call it leadership.

Many women believe that putting themselves last is what makes them a good professional, a good colleague, a good leader. What it actually produces is a very convincing performance of someone who has everything together, and a very tired one.

There is a version of giving that looks like generosity but is actually fear. Fear that if you stop giving, you will stop being needed. Fear that if you put yourself first, even once, the carefully constructed version of you that has everyone taken care of will start to unravel.

The woman who over-gives is almost never doing it purely from abundance. She is doing it because stopping feels dangerous in a way she has never had to examine.

What changes when she examines it is not that she stops caring for others. She cares just as much, sometimes more. But from a completely different internal place: from fullness rather than depletion, from genuine choice rather than compulsion, from a version of herself that has given herself the same permission she so freely gives everyone else.

The shift can start small. One hour a week that is entirely hers. Not a dramatic overhaul, just one hour. Women who make that one choice often report feeling more present everywhere else within weeks, not because the hour fixed everything, but because the act of choosing themselves, even once, quietly shifted how they showed up.

Putting yourself first is not the opposite of showing up for others. It is how you show up as the fullest version of yourself. That is not indulgence. That is leadership.
