You Can Be Confident and Capable and Still Hold Yourself Back

You have never once lacked the skill.

That was never the part that was missing.

For nineteen years I sat across boardroom tables in corporate finance. I watched women who were sharper than anyone else in the room shrink themselves down the moment the conversation got hard. I did the same thing. I could build the model. I could defend it. And somewhere between building it and defending it out loud, I would make myself smaller than the argument I was actually making.

Nobody taught me that. I built it myself, one meeting at a time, without ever noticing I was doing it.

Here's the part almost nobody names correctly.

We call this a confidence problem. It gets sold as one constantly. Take the course. Read the book. Practice the power pose before you walk in, and the voice will come back.

It rarely does. Not because the advice is wrong. Because it is aimed at the wrong target.

Confidence is what you feel. Identity is what you believe you are allowed to be, in that room, in that moment, in front of that specific person.

You can feel completely confident walking in. And still not believe, underneath it, that the room is actually yours to speak in.

In NLP, we'd call this an incongruence: the gap between what you know internally and what your body actually lets you do the moment real pressure shows up. It is not a discipline problem. It is a pattern. Patterns can be seen, and changed, once you know where to look.

This is what I see constantly in the women I work with. They are not short on ability. They have the track record, the credentials, the receipts. And there is still a version of them that goes quiet exactly when the room gets hardest, then spends the drive home replaying what she should have said instead.

That is the actual shift we work toward. Not louder. Not more polished. The room does not need a performance of confidence stacked on top of an identity that has not caught up yet.

It needs you, the version of you that was always capable, finally believing she is allowed to be heard.

This is the exact work inside Inner Compass, a twelve-week small group, capped at eight women, beginning September 16th. Six spots are still open.

If this is a pattern you know all too well, I would love fifteen minutes with you. No pitch. Just a real conversation about whether this is the right room for you right now.
