What is NLP coaching and how does it work?

NLP coaching works with the patterns running underneath a behavior rather than the behavior itself. NLP stands for neuro-linguistic programming, and in practice it means examining how a person's internal responses were built, and changing them at that level rather than managing them from the surface.
Here is the plainer version.
Most coaching works on what you do. Try this in the meeting. Prepare differently. Use this phrase. That advice is often correct and it frequently does not hold, because the behavior was never the thing generating itself. Something underneath was.
NLP goes after the underneath.
Take a woman who freezes right before she speaks in a meeting. Behavior-level coaching gives her a script and a breathing exercise. Useful, sometimes. But the freeze is not a script problem. It is a response her system built at some earlier point, when holding back was genuinely the safer option, and which is still firing in a room where the danger is long gone. She cannot decide her way out of it, any more than she can decide not to flinch.
NLP asks a different set of questions. When does this happen and when does it not. What has to be true for it to fire. What was it protecting. And then, once that is visible, what does the response become when the belief underneath it updates.
What actually happens in a session
It is a conversation, and it is more specific than most conversations.
A coach will ask you to bring an actual moment rather than a general complaint. Not "I lack confidence in meetings" but "last Thursday, in the leadership meeting, when Mark cut across me." Specificity is not a nicety here. It is the working material, because the pattern only shows itself in a particular situation, with a particular person, when something particular was at stake.
From there the work is noticing what your system does in that moment, tracing what it believes, and changing that belief at the level where it actually lives rather than the level where advice usually gets aimed.
You will often leave a session having said very little that felt dramatic, and then notice a week later that a situation which used to cost you three days now costs you an afternoon.
What it is useful for
Patterns that persist despite you knowing better. That is the honest scope.
If you already understand your problem intellectually, have read the books, have taken the advice, and the thing still happens, that gap between insight and change is exactly where this work operates.
It is less useful for skills you simply have not learned yet. If you have never given a board presentation, you need practice, not pattern work.
What it is not
It is not therapy, and the distinction matters. What is the difference between coaching and therapy?
It is not hypnosis, though NLP and hypnotherapy share some history and some practitioners work in both.
It is not a personality assessment. It does not sort you into a type.
And it is not magic. It is a structured way of working with how responses get built, applied by someone trained to notice what you cannot notice from inside your own head.
A note on practitioners
The field is unregulated, which means the training behind the title varies enormously. Practitioner is the entry level qualification. Master Practitioner is further. Trainer means the person is qualified to certify others.
Worth asking anyone you are considering: what level are you trained to, who trained you, and how long have you been working with clients on this specific kind of problem.
